Agra has more than one railway station, and the official pages do not name the same one as nearest. Here is how Cantt, Agra Fort and Raja ki Mandi compare, and what happens after you step off the train.

Which Agra station is near the Taj Mahal depends on the source. Agra has stations called Agra Cantonment, Raja ki Mandi and Agra Fort, and the Taj Mahal's own website treats Agra Cantonment as the main one.2 The same site places the Tourist Information Center for the state tourism department at Cantt, and lists its tours as starting and ending there.8,9 Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism portal, words it differently: its Agra and Taj Mahal pages name Agra City station, code AGA, as the nearest railway station.3 When official pages disagree, the useful question is not which one is right, but which station your train actually calls at.
For the Gatimaan Express the answer is Agra Cantt. The railway's launch release has the 12050 reaching Agra Cantt at 09.50 a.m., and the listing behind this site's tour also has the train arriving in Agra at 9:50 AM.10 Cantt is also the station with the facilities a first-time visitor will look for: a tourist information counter, computerized reservation counters, a waiting room, a retiring room and refreshment rooms, with Indrail Passes sold on site.11
On the map below, Agra Cantt sits at the western edge of the city. The Taj Mahal site describes it as lying near the Sadar Bazaar, towards the southwest of the city.1 Agra Fort station lies nearer the river, with the Fort and then the Taj beyond it, and Raja ki Mandi is on the northern side. Incredible India says Raja Ki Mandi, near the railway station, is the place for clothes and local eats, which is a hint that it is a market district first.12 Nothing on the official pages tells you to get off at the other stations for the Taj.
Anyone typing the Agra station to Taj Mahal distance into a search box wants one number, and the official pages give only a partial one. The Taj Mahal site states that Agra Fort is about 5.5 km from Agra Cantt Railway Station.4 It prints no matching figure for the Taj Mahal itself. On the map the Fort lies between the Cantt and the Taj, so the Fort figure is a floor for the Taj, not an estimate of it, and a quoted kilometre count from a taxi stand is your own best check.
The reverse question, from the Taj Mahal back to the station, has the same answer. Rather than a figure, the better planning tool is the clock. The tour listing on this site gives about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal and 1 hour at Agra Fort, then a drop-off at Agra station at 5:00 PM for a 5:50 PM train. Those blocks of time already include the ride between the station and the gate, so you never have to work out a distance to plan the day.
A few other official distances help you place Agra in its region. The airport is around 7 km from the city center, and the road distances from Agra are 56 km to Mathura, 119 km to Gwalior and 204 km to Delhi.17,18,19 Those long figures matter if the train plan fails and you need to compare it with a road trip; the chart below sets them side by side with the one station figure that the Taj Mahal site does give.
The Taj Mahal site lists taxis, tempos, auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws in the city, plus prepaid taxis for places near the city.13,14 It also says radio taxis are available 24 hours.20 Incredible India suggests a cycle rickshaw ride through the lanes of old Agra as an experience in itself.25 That is a leisure option, not the fastest way to a ticket window, so use it on the way out rather than on the way in.
The final stretch is controlled by a rule. No polluting vehicle is allowed within 500 m of the Taj Mahal, and battery buses and golf carts run from the parking areas to the gates.5 The site's own description says the same thing from the visitor's side: you walk from the parking lots or catch an electric bus.26 Plan for that walk when you judge how long the ride from Cantt will take, and wear shoes that suit a long path.
Which gate you use depends on where your ride drops you. Ticket counters at the Western and Eastern gates sell tickets from one hour before sunrise until 45 minutes before sunset.27 The Southern Gate is exit only, and foreign and domestic visitors use separate queues.15 Cloak rooms stand at both gates, and visitors are asked to avoid big bags because they can lengthen the security check.22,21 Leave anything heavy at the hotel or with the tour operator before you set out.

It is located near the Sadar Bazaar towards the southwest of the city.
Government-issued identity proof is required of tourists.16 Eating and smoking are strictly prohibited inside the Taj Mahal, though a water bottle is allowed.38,42 Drone cameras are prohibited inside and around the monument.37 None of this is hard to follow, but a security line moves at the speed of its slowest bag, so carry little and keep your ID where you can reach it.
Tripods are not allowed inside without permission issued by the Archaeological Survey of India, and photography is prohibited inside the main mausoleum.43,44 Foreign visitors get shoe covers, a water bottle, a tourist guide map and the battery bus or golf cart service free with the Taj ticket.45 Those extras are on the foreigner's ticket page, so read your own ticket category before you buy anything at the gate.
The monument draws crowds: the Taj Mahal site says it attracts 7-8 million tourists annually, more than 0.8 million of them foreign.46 With numbers like that, ticket queues build wherever a coach party stops. Your station choice cannot fix that, but a tour that hands you a ticket and a guide at the platform, as this site's day tour does, takes the queue question off your list. Readers who ask for the Taj Mahal to railway station distance get the same advice in both directions: plan by the clock, not by the kilometre.
