Three fast trains serve the Delhi to Agra corridor. Here is what the railway's own pages say about each, where they stay silent, and how to choose for a day at the Taj Mahal.

Why this comparison needs care

Searches such as Gatimaan Express or Vande Bharat, which is better, expect a verdict on speed and price. The honest answer starts with what can be checked. The railway publishes a launch release for the Gatimaan Express, a list of Shatabdi trains, and lists of Vande Bharat services, but it does not publish one page that puts the three side by side for the Delhi to Agra run.

So this page works from what the official pages do say. For the Gatimaan Express that is a good deal: speed, class, days and launch times. For the other two it is the names, numbers and endpoints, and the pages that sell tickets or show the live timetable, which are the right place for the times that change from season to season.

The comparison also matters less than it seems for a visitor. All three trains are fast, air-conditioned, seated services, and the real differences are the station you leave from, the hour you arrive, the days it runs and the class of seat. Pick the train that fits the day you want at the Taj Mahal, then check its live details.

The Gatimaan Express, in the railway's own words

The Ministry of Railways calls the Gatimaan Express India's first semi high-speed train, capable of a maximum speed of 160 kmph.1 At launch the 12050 left Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08.10 a.m. and reached Agra Cantt at 09.50 a.m. the same day, which is the morning run a day trip is built around, and a figure you can compare with any other morning train on the live schedule.2

It carries two Executive AC Chair Car and eight AC Chair Car coaches, so the choice of seat is between those two classes and nothing else.10 It runs six days a week except Friday, with the numbers 12050 and 12049 for the two directions, and the launch fares were Rs 750 for the chair car and Rs 1,500 for Executive Class.3,12

That is a clear profile, and it fits the Taj Mahal's own calendar, since the monument is closed on Fridays for general viewing.9 The pages on this site about the timetable, tickets and classes go into each of these points in more depth, and the tour sold here uses this train for its return leg, as the listing summary says.

Days of operation

Days a week in the official lists

  • Gatimaan Express6
  • Rani Kamlapati VB6
  • Khajuraho VB6

Each runs 6 days a week in the lists; the Gatimaan Express omits Friday, and the lists do not say which day the two Vande Bharat trains omit.3,6,13

The Shatabdi, a different kind of daytime train

In a Gatimaan Express vs Shatabdi Express comparison, the Shatabdi is a family of daytime express trains on Indian Railways, and the official Shatabdi train list on the Indian Railways enquiry site names the Bhopal Shatabdi. Its entry shows 12002 leaving New Delhi at 06:00 and reaching Habibganj at 14:25, with 12001 leaving Habibganj at 15:00 and reaching New Delhi at 23:30.4

That list shows the endpoints, not the stops, so it does not give an Agra arrival time, a stop list or a fare, and this page will not invent any of them. The official Taj Mahal travel page does name the Shatabdi among the main trains connecting Agra with Delhi, together with Palace on Wheels, Rajdhani, Gatimaan and Taj Express.5

What the Shatabdi offers in practice is an early start. A 06:00 departure from New Delhi is earlier than the 8:10 AM of the Gatimaan Express from Nizamuddin, so it suits a traveller who wants an earlier start, subject to the arrival time on the live timetable. Check that arrival, and whether the day you want is served, before you plan around it.4,2,8

Where Vande Bharat fits

Vande Bharat is the third family, and the official lists tie it to Agra and to Hazrat Nizamuddin in different ways. The Ministry of Railways lists a Banaras to Agra Cantt Vande Bharat Express among its chair car services, and names the Rani Kamlapati to Hazrat Nizamuddin train and the Khajuraho to Hazrat Nizamuddin train among those serving Madhya Pradesh, each running 6 days a week.7,6,13

The Prime Minister flagged off the Vande Bharat Express train between Bhopal and New Delhi at Rani Kamlapati station, which shows that the newer trains serve the Delhi end of the line.16 Whether a given Vande Bharat stops at Agra Cantt on a given day is a timetable question, and the official lists above give names and frequency, not stops or times.

So treat Vande Bharat as a possibility to check, not as a default. Search the live timetable for your date, look at the train that ends at Hazrat Nizamuddin or stops at Agra Cantt, and read its arrival time before you compare it with the Gatimaan. If it fits your day it is a perfectly good option, and the rest of this page applies to it too.

A choosing order

From date to booking, in six moves

  1. Date

Fix the day, not a Friday

The Gatimaan Express does not run on Fridays and the Taj Mahal is closed.3,9

  2. Arrival

Decide when you want to reach Agra

The 12050 reached Agra Cantt at 09.50 a.m. at launch.2

  3. Station

    Pick Nizamuddin or New Delhi

The Gatimaan Express started at Hazrat Nizamuddin and the Bhopal Shatabdi at New Delhi.2,4

  4. Class

    Chair car or Executive

The Gatimaan Express carries Executive AC Chair Car and AC Chair Car coaches.10

  5. Live check

    Read today's timetable

IRCTC and the 139 helpline are the official places to check.8

  6. Return

    Fix the evening train

The 12049 left Agra Cantt at 05.50 p.m. at launch.11

How to choose: time, station, class and day

Start with the day, because the days differ. The Gatimaan Express does not run on Fridays, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.3,9 The Vande Bharat trains named in the official list run 6 days a week, and which day is left out is a detail of each timetable, so confirm that your date is served before you build a plan on it.6

Then look at the station. The Gatimaan Express leaves from Hazrat Nizamuddin at launch, and the Shatabdi from New Delhi, and the choice of station affects how long it takes you to get to the platform from your hotel.2,4 Last, choose the class. On the Gatimaan Express the choice is Executive Class or the chair car, at launch fares of Rs 1,500 and Rs 750.12

If you want one rule of thumb, it is to pick the train that lands you at Agra early enough for your plan and gets you back by a time you can live with. The evening return is the fixed point of a day trip, so the train that offers a comfortable late-afternoon departure from Agra Cantt on the day you travel, such as the 05.50 p.m. of the Gatimaan Express at launch, deserves a second look.11

Before you decide

A comparison checklist

Compare3

  • Read each train's live departure and arrival on IRCTC or via 1398
  • Check that your date is a running day, not a Friday for the Gatimaan3
  • Compare the total fare for the same class, with any quota charge14

Then3

  • Choose Executive Class or the chair car on the Gatimaan Express10
  • Have the passport number of every passenger ready to book15
  • Consider a guided day if you would rather not handle the station

Prices: what the sources let you compare

Fares are where honesty matters most. The only official fares in these sources are the launch fares of the Gatimaan Express, Rs 750 for the chair car and Rs 1,500 for Executive Class, with no concessions.12,17 The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat pages above give no fares, and a fare from one train's launch year is not a fair comparison with another train's present price.

The reliable way to compare is to open the IRCTC booking page for each train on the same date and class and read the totals, including any catering charge and the service charge that a foreign tourist pays, which is Rs 200 + GST per ticket under the quota.14 That gives like for like in minutes, and it avoids relying on an old figure.

A guided day changes the arithmetic, because it bundles the ride with a driver and a guide. The listing on this site starts from $100 for a 12-hour day with a train out and back, and the car days from Delhi shown in the calculator start lower. The calculator on this page shows them side by side.

When none of the three is the right call

There are travellers for whom the train is not the answer. If your plan needs a very early start for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, a train that reaches Agra Cantt after 9:50 AM will not do it, and a car from Delhi leaves when you choose.2 If you travel on a Friday, none of these trains helps you see the mausoleum, because the monument is closed that day.9

The opposite is true for someone who dislikes long road trips. The Taj Mahal site lists the road distance from Agra to Delhi as 204 km, and a train removes that drive and the traffic that comes with it.18 For those travellers the question is not whether to take a train but which one, and the three trains here are the shortlist.

Whatever you pick, use the same checklist: confirm the day, the departure time and the arrival time on IRCTC or by calling 139, pick a class, and keep the e-ticket and a passport or government ID ready.8,19 The pages of this guide on tickets, classes and the return train carry the next steps once you have chosen a train.
