What the two classes of the Gatimaan Express are, how the launch fares and meal rates compare, what the coaches and the lounge offer, and how to decide for a day trip.
Editorial team, tajmahaltraintour.com · Updated November 7, 2026 · Takes 6 min
The Gatimaan Express was launched as an all-seated, fully air-conditioned train. The Ministry of Railways said it would be powered by a 5500 HP electric locomotive and run non-stop with two Executive AC Chair Car and eight AC Chair Car coaches.1 That is the whole menu of classes: there are no sleeper berths and no second-class seats, which is why a day trip on it never involves a berth, a bunk or a night.
The AC Chair Car is the ordinary seat of the train and the Executive AC Chair Car is the upper class, with a higher fare. Both classes ride in the same fast train, hauled by the same locomotive and arriving at the same minute, so the difference between them is comfort and catering, never speed or the time you arrive.1
IRCTC confirms the pairing in its rules for foreign visitors: of the classes open under the Foreign Tourist Quota, the two that exist on this train are the Executive Class (EC) and the AC Chair Car (CC).6 When you pick a class on the booking screen, those are the two letters you will see, EC and CC, and the rest of the quota list is irrelevant to this train, since the others are sleeper and sitting classes it does not carry.
The official fares date from the launch of the train. The Press Information Bureau fixed the fare for the chair car in the fully air-conditioned train at Rs 750, while for Executive Class it was Rs 1,500.2 The follow-up release restated the same amounts and added that no concessions are admissible on the train.11,12
A fare is only half of the price, because catering is run by IRCTC and has its own rates. The IRCTC menu sheet for the train lists the standard breakfast for the AC chair car at 175/- and for the executive chair car at 250/-, both inclusive of taxes.5,4 The evening snack sheet shows the same two amounts, 175/- and 250/-.13,14
So the class decision, Gatimaan Express CC vs EC, is one of comfort per rupee. The extra fare buys a nicer seat and a longer menu, which the sheets show in the cornflakes, flavoured yoghurt and extra bread of the executive breakfast.4 For a trip of under two hours on a day packed with sightseeing, many travellers would weigh that against what they would spend the difference on in Agra.
The official description of the Gatimaan Express interior is short. The release says the coaches are new LHB coaches built at Kapurthala, fitted with bio toilets and fit to run at 160 kmph.3 The follow-up release adds balanced draft gear couplers for a smooth ride and scenic pictures pasted inside the coaches for aesthetics.16
One feature is aimed at the seat itself. Passengers can watch videos on their own smart phones, tablets or laptops over a Wi-Fi network without an internet connection, at no cost.7 The release names it as a free-of-cost onboard entertainment facility, so bring a charged device and headphones if you plan to use it.
There is no published seat plan in these releases, and no seat count either, and this page does not invent one. If you want to know how a row is laid out before you book, the IRCTC booking page shows the coach and lets you choose, or be allotted, a seat for the class you pick, and that screen is the only reliable seat map.
There is a station extra for the class of travel that many people overlook. The Minister inaugurated an Executive Lounge built by IRCTC at Agra Cantt, with a seating capacity for 75-80 persons, on Platform No-1 of the station.9 It is modelled on airport lounges, and the release lists meals on order, hot beverages, Wi-Fi, luggage racks, wheel chairs, recliners and clean toilets.
The release says the lounge is open to passengers at a nominal entry fee of Rs.100 for two hours and Rs 50 for each additional hour, including Wi-Fi, toilets and unlimited tea or coffee.15 That is the launch fee and it is not tied to a class in the text, so check on arrival whether any ticket is required for entry today and what the charge is.
On a day trip the lounge is most useful at the end of the day. After a long stretch in the sun a quiet room with toilets and a recliner at Agra Cantt is a calm place to wait for the 5:50 PM train, if it is open and the entry terms still match the release.10 If you arrive early from the Fort, ask your guide whether it makes sense to use it.

A day trip needs very little luggage, so travel light and keep one small bag at your seat, where you can reach it. Carry water, a charger a light layer for a cold air conditioner, and the documents you need for the Taj Mahal gate, where the official site asks every visitor to carry government-issued identity proof.17
Think about what you cannot take into the monument itself. The Taj Mahal official site prohibits eating and smoking inside, asks visitors to avoid big bags and books because they lengthen the security check, and allows a water bottle.18,19,20 A small daypack from the train fits those rules better than a large case.
Finally, think about heat and cold. A chair car is air-conditioned, and the tourism site recommends October to March as the best season to visit Agra, when mornings can be cool and the afternoon sun is easier to take.21 A thin scarf or jacket for the carriage and a hat for the Fort cover most of the day.
