A day at the Taj ends with a train, and the order of the evening matters more than the morning. Here is what the official papers and the tour listing say about the return, and what your options are if the plan slips.
Editorial team, tajmahaltraintour.com · Updated November 7, 2026 · Takes 8 min
Searches for the Gatimaan Express Agra to Delhi often carry the wrong number, and some use the morning number for the evening run.1 Start with the pair. The railway's launch release gives 12050 to the Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt run and 12049 to the Agra Cantt to Hazrat Nizamuddin run, and both numbers go with the same train.1,2,4 If a booking page shows 12050 for your evening trip, you are looking at the morning train in the wrong direction.1 Pick the 12049 for the way back.1,2
The launch release is also the only official source we read that prints evening times. On the first regular run, the 12049 left Agra Cantt at 17:50 and reached Hazrat Nizamuddin at 19:30 that evening.3 The tour listing on this site agrees: the train leaves Agra station at 5:50 PM and reaches Delhi around 7:30 PM. The launch papers date from the first days of the service, so treat the clock as the baseline and confirm it for your date.
The same release says the train would run on every day of the week except Friday, and that matches the Taj Mahal's own closing day, since the monument is closed on Fridays for general viewing.4,6 A traveler who wants the Agra to Delhi train, Gatimaan Express or another, on a Friday has to check the live timetable, because the launch-era rule would leave no train that evening. The rule may have changed, which is exactly why the check matters: trips planned on the strength of an old press release are the ones that end on a platform with no train.
The return train sets the end of your Taj day, so work backward from 5:50 PM. The tour listing has you dropped at Agra station at 5:00 PM, which is ahead of the 5:50 PM departure. Before that, the listing counts about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, 1 hour at Agra Fort and a 1 hour lunch, with Itimad-ud-Daulah (the Baby Taj) for an optional hour and Mehtab Bagh for an optional 30 minutes. The optional stops are the ones to drop if the day runs behind.
The monument's own clock matters too. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and the ticket counters at the Western and Eastern gates sell tickets until 45 minutes before sunset.7,8 On a short winter day those hours end early, and the evening train will not wait for a late visit. If you are on your own, decide the order of the sights from the evening backward, not from the morning forward.
Fort and Taj are not equal on Fridays either. Agra Fort is open from sunrise to sunset every day, which makes it the Friday option, while the Taj is closed for general viewing.9,6 Because the Gatimaan did not run on Fridays at launch, a Friday return by this train is a booking to verify, not to assume.4 If you can, choose another day for the Taj, and keep the Fort for the day the monument is shut.
On the tour, the evening is handled for you. The listing says the guide takes you to Agra station at 5:00 PM and helps you find your train coach, and that the driver waits outside the coach in Delhi when the train arrives around 7:30 PM. The time between the drop and the departure is your buffer for a late exit from the last stop, and also the time you would spend finding the platform alone.
At Agra Cantt, the station offers a waiting room, a retiring room, refreshment rooms and a tourist information counter.16 An Executive Lounge on Platform 1 was opened at the Cantt for the Gatimaan's launch, modelled on airport lounges, with hot beverages, Wi-Fi, luggage racks and wheel chairs.15,17 Whether you use the lounge or a waiting room, a seat is worth more at 5:00 PM than another monument.
The listing also states free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and a duration of 12 hours. Both of those matter for planning the return, since a day that is booked in one piece starts and ends on the same schedule. If you are building the day yourself, the Foreign Tourist Quota is where the return seat comes from, and its rules are covered in the booking guide. Remember that the 12050 Gatimaan Express is the morning train out of Hazrat Nizamuddin, not the evening one you want.1

The 12049 AgraCantt - H.Nizamuddin Gatimaan Express will start its first regular run on 05/04/2016 from Agra Cantt Railway station at 17:50 hrs.
If you plan the train yourself, book both directions together while you are in the booking system. Foreign visitors can book under the Foreign Tourist Quota up to 365 days in advance, against 60 days for the general advance reservation period.10 The classes under the quota include Executive Class and AC Chair Car, a valid passport number is required for each passenger, and payment is by international debit or credit card.24,25
Verify your mobile number with a one-time code on your IRCTC profile before you book, and keep the confirmation message, since the booking SMS and the confirmation mail follow the payment.26 Refunds go back only to the account you paid from, so use a card you will still have when a refund arrives.21 The quota also asks for a registration, and the IRCTC fee is charged per ticket plus tax, so open the account well before the trip rather than on the day you leave.27
The tour on this site wraps all of this into one booking with a guide at each end, from $100. The self-booked version costs less in money and more in minutes, and the evening is where those minutes are felt. The self-booked version means separate bookings to keep straight, the outbound and the return, and a guide only if you hire one at Agra. Decide once, early, which version you want, and then protect the time at Agra station.
