Three ways to cover the 204 km between Delhi and Agra, set side by side on time, from-price, cancellation and control. The quiz at the top picks one for you; this page explains why.

The best way to travel from Delhi to Agra depends on what you want from the day, and the options are not the same product. A train day trip is a bundle: a seat on the Gatimaan out and back, a guide at each end and the monuments in between. A car day tour is a private vehicle and a guide. A taxi transfer is only a ride, with the sightseeing left to you. Comparing them on price alone mixes three different things.
The distance is the common factor, and it frames the best way to see the Taj Mahal from Delhi in a single day. The Taj Mahal site lists the road distance from Agra to Delhi as 204 km, and says the two cities are connected by expressways.1,3 The train covers the same corridor on rails, leaving Hazrat Nizamuddin and reaching Agra Cantt, and the launch schedule had 08.10 a.m. to 09.50 a.m.4 The road takes whatever the traffic allows.
This page takes its numbers from three kinds of source: the listings' own records for tours and transfers, the railway's launch papers for the Gatimaan, and the Taj Mahal site for the places. Where a source gives no figure, such as a bus time, the page says so instead of guessing. The listings below are examples of each style, not a ranking of every operator in Delhi, and their from-prices are starting prices, not quotes.
The train tour is a 12 hours day by its listing, and it answers the Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi by train question in one booking. Pickup is between 6:30 AM and 7 AM, the train arrives in Agra at 9:50 AM, you spend about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal and 1 hour at Agra Fort, and the return train leaves Agra at 5:50 PM and reaches Delhi around 7:30 PM. The timetable is fixed by the train, which suits a traveler who likes a schedule. It also means you cannot stretch the day: the return train leaves when it leaves, and the optional stops of the itinerary are the first thing to drop if you run behind.
The car day tour is also listed at 12 hours, with 180 minutes of driving in each direction, 180 minutes at the Taj Mahal, 60 minutes at Agra Fort, a 60 minute lunch and 60 minutes at the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah. The record offers a 2 AM pickup for the sunrise option, which the train cannot match, since it reaches Agra at 9:50 AM. If sunrise matters, the car is the way.
A one-way transfer is listed at 4 hours. That is the figure for the ride itself, so it leaves the rest of the day for you to plan, with no guide unless you hire one. The Agra to Delhi transfer is also listed at 4 hours and is available 24 hours, which helps with a late return. For comparison, the chart sets all the listed durations side by side.
The from-prices are the listings' starting prices: the train tour from $100, the car tour from $55, a private tour with a meal from $25 and the one-way transfer from $30. They are starting points for the cheapest option on each listing, so do not read them as the price of the day you want. Open each listing, choose your date and group size, and read what the quoted price includes.
Be careful when you compare. A tour price may or may not include entry tickets, lunch or the train itself, and a transfer price covers only the ride. The Taj Mahal site lists the entry fees separately, for example 1100 rupees for a foreign tourist plus 200 rupees for the main mausoleum, so ask whether the quote includes them.7 The listing pages, not this page, hold the inclusions.
Cancellation is part of the cost. The train tour and the car tour both list free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, while the one-way transfer is non-refundable because all sales are final. If your plans may change, that difference is worth more than a few dollars on the headline price. Read the cancellation line on each listing page at the moment you book, because it is the line that decides what a change of plan costs you.
On the train, the coaches are LHB coaches with bio toilets, and the launch release adds onboard catering organised by IRCTC.11,12 The listing has a guide meeting you outside the coach, and the driver waiting outside it in Delhi in the evening. Control is limited: you keep the train's time and the tour's order, which is easy and a little rigid.
In the car, the control is yours. The record lists a private air-conditioned car that collects you across the Delhi region, whether you start at an address in Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad or Ghaziabad or at the airport, and brings you back to a hotel, a home or the airport. The guide hands over the entry tickets so you skip the ticket queues, and the Taj Mahal site says the monument attracts 7-8 million tourists annually.13
The taxi sits at the other end of the scale. It gives you the most freedom and the least support: no guide in the price, no tickets handled and no schedule beyond the ride. The Taj Mahal site lists prepaid taxis and radio taxis, available 24 hours, in Agra, which helps once you arrive.14,15 Combine the transfer with a guide you hire at the gate if you want independence with a little help.

Take the train tour if you like fixed times, a guide at each end and a day that someone else has planned. Its listing has the guide at the coach, a return train at 5:50 PM and a duration of 12 hours. The launch schedule of the Gatimaan, 08.10 a.m. out and 05.50 p.m. back, is the baseline.4,21 The train fits a traveler who is happy to start at the station rather than in the dark.
Take the car tour if you want sunrise, a flexible stop or a Friday plan. Its record lists the 2 AM pickup, the skipped ticket queues and a drop-off at the hotel or airport. It is the more flexible of the two guided options, and its from-price is lower: from $55 against from $100 for the train tour. The trade is the length of the drive, which the record puts at 180 minutes each way, against a train ride.
Take the transfer if you already have a plan, a guide or a Taj ticket, and simply need a ride. The Delhi to Agra transfer is listed at 4 hours and the Agra to Delhi one is too, from $30 and $22 respectively. Read the cancellation terms before you book, since the Delhi to Agra transfer is non-refundable. The Agra to Delhi transfer lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
